So many people have asked me lately, “How did your blog become a book?” I wanted to share this with you because I think within the story is one of the best lessons I learned from doing a year of daily first time experiences.
Here’s the quick version of the story. In an effort to do something new every day I had to volunteer and say YES to many things I wouldn’t have otherwise done. One day I said YES to fill in as a co-host for the now defunct 10! Show. That day a guest, Jen Groover, said “wow, that’s a great idea.” A year later, a writer (Tim Vandehey) she contacted looked at my blog and contacted me. He connected me with my now incredible agent Penny Nelson who believed it would be a great book and she sold it to Perigee , a division of Penguin.
Those are the brief details. But the lesson learned is this: when you say YES to new experiences your world opens up to all sorts of possibilities and my world opened up ten fold in many ways.
I met incredible people I never would have met. I got a teaching opportunity. I learned to hula hoop and soul line dance too. Like throwing a pebble in a pond, each First sent out ripples in my life, expanding it.
There you have it. This book happened because I started connecting with many of you…many of my old friends and news friends who helped me do Firsts are now in the pages of this book. I thank you all for sharing.
So , I Dare You. Open up your world and do a First today.
