When a tiny middle-aged Korean woman in a black bikini indicated I should get undressed, I hesitated.
Turns out there is no room for modesty at a Korean Spa.
I looked around at the beautiful, marble and white-tiled area, women of all ages and sizes walking around naked and decided, what the hell. I complied.
Naked, laying face up on something akin to a massage table in a wet room, my nameless, non-English speaking “spa treatment” hostess, poured buckets of hot water on my body and started scrubbing.
Part of me wanted to get up and run.
Part of me thought this is an AMAZING first.
Part of me was fearing/loving every little nuance of an hour-long body scrub massage that kind of freaked me out and invaded almost all crevices.
If there is a spa version of “extreme vetting”, this is it. It’s weird and wonderful and my skin …ALL of my skin feels like butter today. Apparently, this is all normal stuff at a Korean spa.
Let me just back up and say this was the idea of Julie T. Fox, a connoisseur of Korean spas. My Damsels in Success group friend discovered this “Four Seasons like” paradise just across the river from NYC and invited a group of us to give it a try.
SoJo Spa is five floors of every kind of sauna, hot tub, heated pools in outside and indoor luxury environments, plus dining areas and an attached hotel soon to come.
To play in this urban spa resort you pay $45.00 and relinquish your shoes as soon as you walk in. You are given a wristband with a chip to log all of your charges along with shorts and a top they call loungewear.
Once checked in you are free to roam, in some areas naked (gender separate), in some areas with a bathing suit and in some areas in your loungewear.
Heated infinity pools overlook the city skyline.
After my spa hostess left me like a limp noodle scrubbed and massaged, I was stunned to see her strip naked and jump into a hot tub. Guess that’s normal in a Korean Spa too.
All I know is, this was quite the adventure if you’re looking for an exotic, get-out-of-your-comfort-zone first.
What do you think? Ever had any interesting spa experiences?
