Think about it. There is almost nothing more memorable than the gift of sharing a first time experience.
An experience we share bonds us in that unique moment when we “do the new” together.
Our brain, our world, our heart opens up when we dare ourselves. The pleasure is doubled when we get to share it with someone we love.
So before you buy another gadget, sweater or tie…consider these experience gift ideas for the holidays.
For the creatives:
Paint and drink wine classes. There are several companies across the country now that teach you to paint something while you drink wine. (The wine is optional.) It’s a blast. It doesn’t matter if you can’t draw a straight line. Everyone can do this. All offer gift certificates.
Art, sculpting, glass blowing, ceramics, jewelry making classes, knitting, crocheting, quilt making…. (You get the idea.) You can find all sorts of art classes in your community. Sign up the friend or loved one who says “I always wanted to (fill in the blank) but… Help them get rid of the “but” by buying a class for yourself and your giftee.
DANCE! DANCE! DANCE! Line dancing, square dancing, ballroom dancing, hip-hop. Swing your partner round and round and buy a dance lesson or two or three. Be ready to lead your giftee to some new steps.
For wannabe writers:
Memoir writing, children’s book writing, screenplays…. Help get your giftee get started on that writing dare they’ve been talking about for years.
Concerts, plays, and getaways. If you know the kind of music, artists and places your giftee would love, plan a day or night of entertainment. Combine it with a quick trip to the city or short getaway out of town. Your giftee will love the thought you’ve put into planning something so special for the two of you.
A little more Daring?
I Fly. I Fly indoor skydiving is now in major cities throughout the country. I always say you don’t have to jump out of a plane to dare yourself. Seriously! This is fun and daring without risking your life. Buy a gift certificate for you and your giftee and FLY!
Did I mention indoor rock climbing? My husband is 68 years old and totally enjoyed this. You do need to be somewhat physically fit and active. Face your fear of heights and enjoy the climb.
Horseback riding, race car driving, zip lining, helicopter rides, mechanical bull rides, balloon rides, flying lessons, ice curling. Check your local listings for thrilling first-time experiences. Again, it always works better if you go along for the experience too.
Cooking lessons, wine tastings, food tours. Who wants another cookbook? Give a real experience that’s hands-on or gets you right in the kitchen. OR Give your giftee a hands-on lesson to learn your famous secret recipe. All you have to give is ingredients and your time.
Hey, this list could go on and on.
You get the idea. Get creative. Really think about the kind of experience your giftee has been yearning for or talking about. If your giftee is a gardener, spring for some flower show tickets. If your giftee wants to learn to take great pictures, find a photography class.
If your giftee is just plain stuck, give them yourself for a day to go explore, try new restaurants, new food, see things together for the first time.
Oh yeah. You can also give them my book, I Dare Me, to offer some extra inspiration. Wrap it up with a card and a gift certificate and you have an amazing one of a kind daring experience package.
Have some other good experience gift ideas? Please share! I’d love to know what you’ve tried.
