Do you have a reverse mentor?
Mother’s Day, my sweet daughter started taking pictures of us and putting them on Instagram. She added color and movement and words and I said…”teach me.”
And in that moment I felt the joy of learning from her, playing with the app I’ve promised myself I would get to know. I’ve been pretty much ignoring it even though I have had an account for years. Check it out. I’m working on it! https://www.instagram.com/luann_cahn/
Last week, one of my student workers showed me Voice Memos on my iPhone.
“Get out! I can record for an hour or more? How long has this been on my phone?”10 years? NOOOO!
I’m sure there’s a few more things on my iPhone I’m clueless about. I still don’t ask Siri for anything. I suppose I should try to talk to her. I’m just kind of committed to asking google everything.
But, I digress. The bottom line is some of my best daily dares, come from my reverse mentors. They play music and artists for me I’ve never heard. (The Grid anyone?)
They push me too.
It still is exhilarating to do the new, to discover something that makes my life easier, helps me be creative or makes me laugh.
They interpret slang for me.
This week’s new phrase? The Tea. You know, like “what’s the tea?” It means the gossip (in case you didn’t know either).
In return, I hope I teach my reverse mentors about life, career building, writing, leading, daring, and pushing against their fears.
It’s even better when shared by mentor and mentee, mother and daughter, teacher and student. We bond with those we learn with or learn from.
If you mentor, I applaud you.
If you don’t have a reverse mentor yet, I gotta tell you, you’re missing out. Find one or two or three.
I dare you.
