Dorene Reinhardt read I Dare Me and dared herself and her husband to “take a hike”…haha…. Here’s her guest blog
My husband and I had planned a trip to Arizona and Las Vegas. I told him that we should go beyond our regular walking and go hiking, do something different.
Keep in mind that we could walk 4 to 5 miles and exercise regularly.
So I did some research and while visiting a college friend who is truly “outdoorsy” I asked her to recommend some trails to us. I specifically said NOT YOUR KIND OF HIKING. Hiking for us, amateurs!
So off we went… About a half mile in a woman said “just wanted to let you know a rattlesnake crossed the path up there. It’s probably gone but maybe you should stay close to those people ahead of you.”
What?? Just what I need. So I literally walked 6 miles, with my head peeled to the ground looking for snakes.
However, what I started to realize was that this was no EASY hike!! We later found out it was moderate by the parks system standards!!
6 miles around, UP and DOWN a mountain.
Truly the hardest physical thing I have ever done (besides giving birth) In fact, while I was about to cry I thought – this is like labor. There is nothing you can do and only one way out so keep going. And I did!
All kidding aside, it felt great to accomplish this – even though I wasn’t prepared. Just keeps me motivated for more firsts.
The next day we tried the truly easy trail and it was a pleasure!
